Everything every Melissa Cross client learns

1 course in 3 sections
9 classes, 13+ hours
Warm-ups for every range

Melissa doesn’t teach sounds to copy. She teaches the function beneath them, so that your sound is your own and holds up night after night. Speak/Sing/Scream is that work from the ground up: 1 course in 3 sections, with 9 classes recorded live on Zoom and more than 13 hours of instruction.

1 voice, 3 ways to use it

Speaking, singing and screaming operate from the same machine. The fundamentals of respiration, phonation, registration, resonance and articulation are foundational to all vocal behavior, whether talking, singing or screaming. SPEAK puts the basics in the context of something you do every day: talk. Essential basics here, so don’t skip it.

“If it’s in your speech, it’s in your singing, and it’s in your screaming, too.”
— Melissa Cross, in SPEAK

The 3 sections, in order

SPEAK · 3 classes
The speak warm-up: 5 minutes, every morning, before you say anything. For screamers who don’t sing, it’s the warm-up. For singers, it’s the morning warm-up that prepares your voice for vocal excellence throughout the day, instead of exacerbating problems with poor habits.

  • Imagery that body-maps the technique, so you can recall it with confidence
  • Conditioning of the jaw, lips and tongue for articulatory precision (another 5 minutes)
  • The poor habits of speech, and how they can bleed into singing and screaming problems

SING · 3 classes and the range-specific warm-ups

  • Class 1: how the voice works, and finding the center of your voice to determine which voice type and warm-up belong to you
  • Class 2: a demonstration of the singer’s warm-up, 14 exercises for learning to navigate between vocal registers seamlessly, the key to effortless singing
  • Class 3: the 5 Star Recipe, necessary for preparing any song to record or to put in your set. Also phrasing and the importance of rhythm, overcoming stage fright, and how to add noise to your singing for authenticity
  • Range-specific warm-ups for all voice types: Bass, Baritone, Tweeny (between baritone and tenor), Tenor, Countertenor, Contralto, Mezzo-Soprano, Soprano

SCREAM · 3 classes
Screaming in music is nothing like screaming in a tantrum. Melissa teaches vocal function without the emotion. This helps the emotion stay in your heart and your intent, not in your larynx.

  • Class 1: the 4 kinds of scream (fry, hybrid, false cord and death), the physical function of each, and why it’s best to learn fry first
  • Class 2: hybrid (which combines phonation and fry melodically), false cord and death, all explained so you can ultimately interchange them
  • Class 3: a screamer’s session from start to finish: the screamer’s warm-up, straws, and what to do if you lose your voice
“It is not necessary to be damaged to sound damaged.”
— Melissa Cross, in SCREAM

What’s included

  • 9 pre-recorded classes, 3 per section, with more than 13 hours of instruction
  • Range-specific warm-ups for every voice type, about 14 minutes each
  • Melissa coaching students one at a time in every class, so you hear the questions and the fixes
  • English subtitles in every video
  • Watch at your own pace and pause, rewind, repeat

Speak/Sing/Scream is $249 for the whole course.

Who it’s for

Singers and screamers at any level. For beginners who want a clear path, and for professionals who need more consistency and edge. SPEAK is also for anyone who talks for a living, often over noise: voice-over artists, comedians, actors, teachers, bartenders and flight attendants.

How it works

  • The streaming links to all 3 sections are emailed to you as soon as you buy.
  • The classes were recorded live on Zoom, so you’ll hear students’ questions as well as Melissa’s answers.
  • You’ll need a mirror, a pencil and a couple of straws. Melissa uses all 3 in class.
